keloid excision

Keloids are overgrown areas of scar tissue that form at the site of a previous injury such as an incision, wound, vaccination, pimple or piercing. They appear on the skin as an irregularly-shaped pink or red scar that is raised above the rest of the skin and continues to grow into areas that were not affected by the initial injury.

Keloid Treatments | Scar Tissue Removal | Manhattan | New York City (NYC)Certain people are more prone to developing keloids, including those with darker skin tones and those who have a family history of keloids. They can appear anywhere, but are most common around the neck, ears, chest, shoulders and arms.

If you have ever had a keloid before, the best method of prevention is to avoid injuries to the skin. Steer clear of piercings, tattoos and elective surgeries. In the case of a necessary medical procedure, inform your doctor of your keloid history. Precautions can be taken, such as applying steroids, medications or dressings to the wound, that may be able to successfully prevent the formation of a keloid post-surgery.

Treatment of keloids depends on the personal preference and desired outcome of the patient.
